Clairemont & College Area Bus Lanes Move Forward

Downtown, San Diego - The City Council’s Land Use & Housing Committee voted to advance updated community plans for the Clairemont and College Area that include new bus lanes, Class IV and Class I bike lanes, and more housing near transit. The plans now head to the City Council for a full vote in December.

The plans were approved after hours of public comments, during which advocates from RideSD, Vibrant Clairemont, the YIMBY Democrats of San Diego, and more spoke up.

“The inclusion of bus lanes on El Cajon Boulevard and College Avenue will help to make major buses like route 215 truly competitive with cars. And when combined with denser housing near these corridors, this plan will give your constituents a more affordable and accessible life“, said Guthre Leonard, RideSD’s Advocacy Fellow.

“This plan update provides home opportunities to those in need, and it enhances the character of our community“, said Ian Grooms, founder of Vibrant Clairemont.

The College Area plan update was approved in a 3-1 vote, with Councilmember Campillo voting no. The Clairemont plan update was approved unanimously.

The bus lanes in the College Area are proposed for:

  • El Cajon Boulevard (ECB) from 54th Street to Montezuma Road.

  • College Avenue from El Cajon Boulevard to Montezuma Road.

The bus lanes in Clairemont are proposed for Genesee Avenue between SR-52 and Marlesta Drive.
