Bus Lanes Proposed for the College Area

College Area, San Diego - The City of San Diego released the second draft of the College Area Community Plan Update (CPU). Community Plans are documents that govern zoning, mobility planning, and neighborhood development.

The College Area CPU’s vision is to create a “college town with vibrant mixed-use corridors, villages and nodes that connect to neighborhoods and San Diego State University and enhance the community”, per the City Planning Department.

To support that vision, City Planning is recommending bus lanes in key streets. Bus lanes are used in cities around the world due to their demonstrated benefits in improving travel times and increasing ridership.

The specific bus lane recommendations are on:

  • El Cajon Boulevard (ECB) from 54th Street to Montezuma Road.

  • College Avenue from El Cajon Boulevard to Montezuma Road

These upgrades would benefit riders on route 1, 856, 936, and the Rapid 215. Combined, these routes had over 2.9 million passenger rides in Fiscal Year 2024.

The first draft of the CPU only included transit lanes on ECB from 54th Street to College Avenue, and they were not explicitly mentioned as a Policy in the document. Four months ago, RideSD submitted a letter urging the inclusion of bus lanes on these two streets and mobilized local supporters to submit public comments in support.
