Transit Improvements

Open Payments

At RideSD, we deliver results that make public transit more accessible and user-friendly. Through our organizing, we championed a game-changing upgrade for San Diego's transit riders: the implementation of contactless payment systems.

In 2023, we launched a targeted campaign to modernize fare payment technology, beginning with a compelling open letter that garnered over 100 influential signatures. We mobilized transit riders to share their stories directly with the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) board, amplifying the call for seamless, contactless payments through credit cards and mobile wallets.

Our strategic organizing led to decisive action. In September 2023, the MTS board approved the upgrade, and by July 2024, the new fare validators were operational. Today, thousands of transit riders experience the ease and convenience of contactless payments—thanks to RideSD.

This success is one of many examples of how RideSD turns visionary ideas into real-world improvements.

Saving San Diego’s Train Connection to LA

The LOSSAN Corridor—a lifeline connecting San Diego to Los Angeles—is the nation's second-busiest passenger train route, transporting millions of people and over a billion dollars worth of goods annually. Yet, this essential infrastructure is at risk. Coastal erosion threatens to sever this critical connection as unstable bluffs along the route crumble into the ocean.

At RideSD, we deliver solutions to safeguard vital transit systems. Our organizing efforts have brought attention and action to this pressing issue, working alongside state leaders to ensure this lifeline remains intact for generations to come. Highlights of our impactful campaign include:

RideSD is proud to be a leader in protecting San Diego's connection to Los Angeles, demonstrating the power of organizing to drive real-world solutions.
