Bus Lanes Proposed for Clairemont

Clairemont, San Diego – The City of San Diego released the second draft of the Clairemont Community Plan Update (CPU) in August 2025. Community Plans are documents that govern zoning, mobility planning, and neighborhood development.

The updated plan sets a vision for a more connected Clairemont with greater housing opportunities. Under the proposed plan, the neighborhood could accommodate up to 50,200 residents, an increase of 21,400 over today’s population, and allow for up to 17,100 more homes. The plan focuses new homes near transit and services to reduce car dependency and improve quality of life.

To support a more connected future, the City Planning Department is recommending bus lanes along a key corridor: Genesee Avenue between SR-52 and Marlesta Drive. Bus lanes are an internationally proven solution to speed up transit, boost ridership, and make service more reliable.

These improvements will directly support SANDAG’s NextGen Rapid 41, a planned high-frequency transit line that will connect Hillcrest, Fashion Valley, Linda Vista, Clairemont, University City, UTC, and UC San Diego. The Rapid 41 is designed to provide travel times that are competitive with driving, which relies on dedicated bus lanes to avoid congestion and maintain consistent frequencies.

If Clairemont is to welcome over 20,000 new residents without worsening traffic, then fast, reliable transit options must be planned now and built rapidly. Bus lanes will be key in ensuring new transit can function effectively and attract riders.
